Flavors of Central Texas - McAlister's Deli {Straight from the Chair}

The word “delicatessen” is actually German (but borrowed from France) and simply refers to fine foods.  It originated in Germany in the 1800’s and, over the years, started to represent establishments that offered these foods as opposed to the foods themselves.  And that’s your history lesson for the day.

Mike Linnemann here again, touring our fine city and sampling the delicious offerings of our Flavors of Central Texas participants.  Since this journey began I’ve put on a few pounds, but that’s what winter is for.  I’ll worry about it in the Spring.

Today for lunch I stopped at a “deli” called McAllister’s.  Fortunately for us, we don’t have to go all the way to Germany to eat like this, we can just pull off I-14 in front of Hobby Lobby and eat like kings all day.

McAllister’s is a great stop if you need a quick bite but still want quality food.  But there’s more!  They’re also a great place to go if you’re hosting a group or meeting.  Have sandwiches (and soups, salads, and a myriad of other things) – will travel.

I opted for the spicy turkey melt with a side of mac and cheese.  The sandwich was amazingly good – big hunks of fresh avocado, dark greens, sliced tomato, and tender turkey all wrapped in a warm, incredibly fresh baguette.  Absolute heaven!

This place is quick, fresh, and easy to get to.  Thumbs up, McAllisters!
