A Step Into Killeen: Seeing Downtown in a New Way

Downtown Killeen has a way of surprising you when you slow down and take it in on foot. That’s exactly what happened during our latest A Step Into Killeen walking tour.

Instead of passing by familiar storefronts, participants stepped inside, met the people behind the businesses, and got a closer look at what keeps downtown moving every day. Each stop offered something different—not just in what the business does, but in the story behind how it got there.

The group started at Killeen Urgent Care and Family Medicine Clinic, a local healthcare provider serving the community with walk-in medical services and everyday care needs. From there, participants explored a variety of downtown businesses that each added a different piece to the story of the area.

At Khanetic Images, attendees got a look at a photography studio focused on capturing portraits, branding images, and creative visual storytelling for clients. The Ballroom showcased its role as a versatile event venue, hosting everything from celebrations to community gatherings. At Wycked Apple, the group saw how handcrafted candied apples are made, highlighting a small business built around specialty treats and creativity in the kitchen.

The tour also included Secret Stop, a speakeasy-style venue that offers a unique entertainment experience tucked into downtown. Rounding out the stops, Americans United Inc. provided insight into its print, production, and fulfillment services—an important behind-the-scenes operation that supports other businesses with marketing and logistics needs.

Together, these stops highlighted not just the variety of businesses in downtown Killeen, but also the different ways they contribute to the local economy and community life.

What stood out most wasn’t just the variety of businesses—it was the people. Owners and staff shared openly about what they do, why they do it, and how deeply they’re connected to the community around them. Those conversations are really what the tour is about.

One attendee, Jae Ward, captured that feeling well after the tour:

"I had a blast on the A Step Into Killeen tour! I loved getting a behind-the-scenes look at some of Killeen's local businesses and hearing the stories behind them. Huge thanks to the Chamber for putting it all together! Can't wait for the next one."

Experiences like this remind us that downtown isn’t just a collection of buildings—it’s a network of people building something together. The A Step Into Killeen series is our way of making those connections a little more visible and a little more personal.

We’re grateful to every business that opened their doors for this tour and shared a piece of their story with us. And we’re already looking forward to the next walk downtown, where there will be even more to discover, learn, and appreciate.
